Hi, my name is Kathy and I have been in the medical profession for over 30 years. I think of myself as an “Accidental Nurse” as it was not my first major and to be truthful never thought about nursing as a career. I was not happy and decided it was time to figure out my life journey. A professor suggested I look into medicine and once I started learning about the human body; I was hooked.
After completing nursing school I accepted a position in the ER, it was an excellent place to start. Later, I worked in medical-oncology unit, the Medical-Coronary Care unit; MICU and later the Spinal Cord and Medical ICU, Nuclear Medicine, Recovery Room, Interventional Radiology, Staff Educator (in 4 different areas with one being the ICU and stepdown unit) and lastly a Home care nurse.
To some, it might appear that I jumped around a lot, which I did. However, with each specialty area I learned those things not taught in nursing school and which carried over into other areas of medicine I worked in. This gives me a level of experience and knowledge you will not find in people who stayed in just one area of nursing for the entire career.
While I have a great deal to share, I am sure there will arise issues that I am not familiar with. In that case, I will do my best to reach out to professionals I trust, to get their experiences on the topic.
In my free time I love to garden and cook.
